Kraft and Northern Wisconsin - A Rich History! Did you know Antigo was home to the second cheese plant in the Kraft Cheese Company enterprise, a company started by J.L. Kraft in 1909? In fact, the Kraft family started Kraftwood Gardens on Enterprise Lake, in Elcho WI. The gardens are still owned by the Kraft family. By 1914, the company, based in Chicago, was selling 30 kinds of cheese across the United States. The Kraft Cheese Company is known for its many advancements in the pasteurized processed food industry housing the world's largest cheese laboratory in the 1920's. By the 1940's Kraft Cheese Company employed over 10,000 people making far more than just cheese, so the company name was changed to Kraft Foods. J.L Kraft was not only known for his advancements in pasteurization but also for his unique and effective product marketing. Today, Kraft Foods, Inc. is the largest confectionery, food, and beverage corporation headquartered in the United States and the second-largest in the world. It markets many brands in more than 155 countries.
